1That which came as the word of the Lord to Jeremiah the prophet aconcerning the nations.

2To bEgypt, concerning the army of cPharaoh Neco king of Egypt, which was by the Euphrates River at dCarchemish, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon defeated in the efourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah: 3 fLine up the shield and
I.e. small shield
buckler,
And draw near for the battle!
4Harness the horses,
And
Or go up, you horsemen
mount the steeds,
And take your stand with helmets on!
iPolish the spears,
Put on the jscale-armor!
5Why have I seen it?
They are terrified,
They are kdrawing back,
And their lmighty men are defeated
And have taken refuge in flight,
Without facing back;
Heb Magor-missabib; i.e. Terror is on every side
,
nTerror is on every side!”
Declares the Lord.
6Let not the oswift man flee,
Nor the mighty man escape;
In the north beside the river Euphrates
They have pstumbled and fallen.
7Who is this that qrises like the Nile,
Like the rivers whose waters surge about?
8Egypt rises like the Nile,
Even like the rivers whose waters surge about;
And He has said, “I will rrise and cover that land;
I will surely sdestroy the city and its inhabitants.”
9Go up, you horses, and
Lit act like madmen
,
udrive madly, you chariots,
That the mighty men may
Lit go forth
march forward:
Ethiopia and
I.e. Libya (or Somaliland)
,
xPut, that handle the shield,
And the

10For aathat day belongs to the Lord
Heb YHWH, usually rendered Lord
God of hosts,
A day of acvengeance, so as to avenge Himself on His foes;
And the adsword will devour and be satiated
And
Lit be saturated with

For there will be a afslaughter for the Lord
Heb YHWH, usually rendered Lord

In the land of the north by the river Euphrates.
11Go ahup to Gilead and obtain balm,
aiO virgin daughter of Egypt!
In vain have you multiplied
Lit healings
remedies;
There is akno healing for you.
12The nations have heard of your alshame,
And the earth is full of your amcry of distress;
For one anwarrior has stumbled over
Lit warrior
another,
And both of them have fallen down together.

13 This is the
Lit word
message which the Lord spoke to Jeremiah the prophet about the aqcoming of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to arsmite the land of Egypt:
14Declare in Egypt and proclaim in asMigdol,
Proclaim also in Memphis and atTahpanhes;
Say, ‘Take your stand and get yourself ready,
For the ausword has devoured those around you.’
15Why have your avmighty ones become prostrate?
They do not stand because the Lord has awthrust them down.
16They have repeatedly axstumbled;
Indeed, they have fallen one against another.
Then they said, ‘Get up! And aylet us go back
To our own people and our native land
Away from the
Lit oppressing sword
,
basword of the oppressor.’

Some ancient versions read Call the name of Pharaoh a big noise
They cried there, ‘Pharaoh king of Egypt is but bca big noise;
He has let the appointed time pass by!’
18As I live,” declares the bdKing
Whose name is the Lord of hosts,
Surely one shall come who looms up like beTabor among the mountains,
Or like bfCarmel by the sea.
19Make your baggage ready for bgexile,
O bhdaughter dwelling in Egypt,
For biMemphis will become a desolation;
It will even be burned down and
Lit without
bereft of inhabitants.
20Egypt is a pretty bkheifer,
But a
Or possibly mosquito
horsefly is coming bmfrom the northit is coming!
21Also her bnmercenaries in her midst
Are like
Lit of the stall
fattened bpcalves,
For even they too have turned back and have fled away together;
They did not stand their ground.
For the day of their calamity has come upon them,
The time of their bqpunishment.
22Its sound moves along like a serpent;
For they move on
Or in force
like an army
And come to her as woodcutters with axes.
23They have cut down her bsforest,” declares the Lord;
Surely it will no more be found,
Even though

they are now more numerous than bulocusts
And are without number.
24The daughter of Egypt has been put to shame,
Given over to the

25The Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, says, “Behold, I am going to punish Amon of bxThebes, and byPharaoh, and Egypt along with her bzgods and her kings, even Pharaoh and those who catrust in him. 26I shall give them over to the
Lit hand
power of those who are ccseeking their lives, even into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and into the hand of his
Lit servants
officers. ceAfterwards, however, it will be inhabited as in the days of old,” declares the Lord.
27But as for you, O Jacob My servant, cfdo not fear,
Nor be dismayed, O Israel!
For, see, I am going to cgsave you from afar,
And your descendants from the land of their captivity;
And Jacob will return and be chundisturbed
And secure, with no one making him tremble.
28O Jacob My servant, do not fear,” declares the Lord,
“For ciI am with you.
For I will make a full end of all the nations
Where I have driven you,
Yet I will cjnot make a full end of you;
But I will ckcorrect you properly
And by no means leave you unpunished.”
